The Living Path of the Xuanling Lineage

The Xuanling Lineage is one of the enduring schools within the tradition of Chinese Taoism. Its origins trace back to the Tang Dynasty, when Grandmaster Ye Fashan of the Maoshan tradition entrusted his esoteric arts to his disciple, Ye Zongsheng. This lineage has continued across fifty-six generations, carried forward over a thousand years.

Within the Xuanling Lineage, the Tao has never been regarded as something to pursue or master. It is not a force to be directed, nor a principle to be controlled, but something one learns to recognize — quietly, gradually — in the movement of life.

In this tradition, human beings are not separate from the world, but part of a greater whole. To live well is not to stand above life, but to live within it — with awareness of what surrounds us, and respect for all that exists alongside us.

To understand the Tao, in this lineage, is not to gain control, but to see clearly. As this understanding deepens, the mind grows quieter, and one’s place in the world becomes less conflicted, more at ease.

To live alongside Heaven and Earth, and exist among all beings.

This is the foundation the Xuanling Lineage has carried forward for over a thousand years — a way of living that honors every life and safeguards the bonds that connect all beings.

“Xuan” points to the origin of all things — the unseen ground of existence.

“Ling” is the subtle connection between lives — the current that binds beings to Heaven and Earth.

Pronunciation: Shwahn-ling [ʃwɑːn lɪŋ]

The Xuanling Lineage was founded in the Tang Dynasty by Ye Zongsheng, direct disciple of the Taoist master Ye Fasan (616–720). Ye Fasan, a leading figure of the Maoshan talismanic tradition, was respected by Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian. In his later years, he transmitted his teachings — including The True Revelation of Xuanling Mystical Arts — to Ye Zongsheng, establishing the Lineage.

Across the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, through war and political change, the transmission endured. It moved from court to common life in the Song, re-emerged in Nanjing during the Ming, and later centered in Beijing. Today it stands in its 56th generation.

Mission:

The Xuanling Lineage is rooted in classical Chinese metaphysics and Taoist tradition. Its guiding principle is simple: To safeguard the righteous path of spiritual beings.

It holds that humans and animals share a deep spiritual bond — one that is real and worthy of protection. The Spiritual Embrace and Empowerment Ritual was developed for this purpose: through traditional Taoist ceremony, it strengthens the bond between guardian and companion, supporting clarity, vitality, and shared spiritual growth.

Lineage Structure: The transmission rests on two complementary roles.

Spiritual Ritual Masters: Guardians of the ceremonial tradition recorded in The True Revelation of Xuanling Mystical Arts. They guide and protect the spiritual bond.

Masters of Spiritual Artifacts: Working from The Sacred Scroll of Mystic Artifacts, they craft the Lineage’s sacred pieces — the Spiritual Embrace Orb, Spiritual Empowerment Orb, Spiritual Continuance Orb, Spiritual Vitality Orb, and others — uniting craftsmanship with ritual consecration.

Together, they form the complete lineage system. Each Grandmaster is drawn from the leading Spiritual Ritual Master of their generation, ensuring continuity of the transmission.

Today, from imperial courts to ordinary households, the Xuanling Lineage continues its work in its 56th generation — carrying forward a tradition that has endured for over a thousand years.

The Xuanling Lineage holds that every life — human or animal — carries equal spirit. None stands above another. All arise from the same Tao.

Two thousand years ago, Zhuangzi wrote: “Heaven and Earth are one finger. All things are one horse.” Forms may differ, but their source is shared. When we loosen our habit of dividing and ranking, we begin to sense the quiet thread that runs through all living beings.

For over a thousand years, this has been the Lineage’s guiding principle: All beings of spirit are family.

Your cat. Your dog. They are not property, but companions walking beside you. They cannot speak their feelings, yet they express them in closeness, in watchful eyes, in steady presence. What they offer is trust. What we offer in return is protection and care.

The vision of the Xuanling Lineage is simple: equal spirit, lifelong companionship.

Every life deserves respect. Every bond deserves to be honored. This has always been the work of the Xuanling Lineage.

In classical Taoist tradition, ritual and sacred objects work together. Ceremony gives intention; the artifact carries it forward. Their shared purpose is protection, harmony, and blessing.

What is a Xuanling Spiritual Artifact?

Xuanling Spiritual Artifacts arise from over a thousand years of transmitted Taoist practice. Each piece is crafted by the Lineage's Masters of Spiritual Artifacts in accordance with The Sacred Scroll of Mystic Artifacts — made by hand, consecrated through traditional ceremony, and each made for a specific intention. Their purpose is to restore harmony between living beings and safeguard the bond between guardian and companion. From the Tang court to the present day, those who carry these artifacts often describe something difficult to name — a quiet settling of unease, a steadier calm shared by both guardian and companion. Deeper trust. A warmer sense of reassurance. A grounded feeling of mutual protection.

To carry a Xuanling Spiritual Artifact is to welcome an ancient guardianship into daily life — an unseen thread between you and the one beside you, strengthened quietly through shared presence.

The Spiritual Embrace and Empowerment Ritual: This is the core ceremony of the Xuanling Lineage.

Animals feel deeply, yet their ways of expression are limited. When their emotions go unseen, unease can follow. Led by a Spiritual Ritual Master, this ceremony strengthens the spiritual bond between guardian and companion, fostering clarity, steadiness, and mutual reassurance.

Spiritual Embrace Orb · Spiritual Empowerment Orb · Spiritual Covenant

These three form a complete set:

  • Spiritual Embrace Orb — worn by the companion; settles and stabilizes emotional energy.
  • Spiritual Empowerment Orb — worn by the guardian; attunes and sustains the shared bond.
  • Spiritual Covenant — a traditional ritual document drawn from The True Revelation of Xuanling Mystical Arts, formally witnessing and anchoring the connection.

Consecrated together through ceremony, they function as one unified commitment.

Spiritual Continuance Orb

A Bridge for Continuing the Spiritual Bond

The loss of a longtime companion is among life's deepest sorrows. Taoist teaching holds: birth is not the beginning; death is not the end. The spiritual bond remains.

Worn on the wrist, the Spiritual Continuance Orb is crafted from sterling silver, black agate, and mother-of-pearl, engraved with traditional motifs and the Taiji symbol. Through dedicated ceremony and formal petition, it becomes a bridge — sustaining love and guardianship in another form. Not an object of grief, but of continuity.

Spiritual Vitality Orb

Designed for living companions, this artifact is consecrated to support vitality and resilience.

May every companionship endure with greater strength and care.

The Xuanling Lineage has endured for over a thousand years, passing through fifty-six generations. Today, it is guided by the 56th Grandmaster.

The Grandmaster maintains a clear conviction: that harmony with nature, respect for life, and compassion remain essential in the modern world. While preserving its rituals and spiritual artifacts, the lineage brings this understanding into daily life — deepening the bond between guardians and their animal companions, and extending that empathy into human relationships.

From this vision, Pawhisperer emerged as the official practice of the Xuanling Lineage, guided by the Grandmaster. It carries a simple intention: to bring this tradition beyond the altar and into everyday life, into the quiet moments shared between people and their companions.

Pawhisperer is not a religion and requires no belief or worship. Through consecrated artifacts and dedicated rituals, it safeguards the bond between guardians and their companions. Every artifact is personally blessed by the Grandmaster through a dedicated ritual.

The Xuanling Lineage is also a member of the China Small Animal Protection Association, supporting animal welfare and cultural exchange.

A thousand years ago, the lineage safeguarded spiritual bonds within the imperial court. Today, it continues to protect the quiet, enduring bond between humans and the animals beside them.
